Aux. fans won't come on...

For the last few months I've been relying on the aux. fans to keep the engine cool while I stomach spending $600 on a new fan clutch. On Friday I noticed the temp going higher than before. When I got home and parked, I realized the fans didn't kick in. Fuses are ok....where else should I look?

Thanks,

Craig

Pull out the wiring diagram....

Start with checking the temp switch and make sure the fan still works.
$600 for a fan clutch? You can buy the toyota silicone fluid and refill that puppy -many claim reasonable sucess and it's cheap.

I bought the CD's from someone years ago, but they're not original and I can't get them to work.

Not even sure where the temp sensor is, or how to make the fan's kick in.

I found a MB junk yard a few miles from me and they have used fan clutches for $250. I don't want to take the time to try and make the old clutch work. Easer to buy a used one of bite it and buy a new one.

http://mb.braingears.com/ for the service cd's
You can also check the aux fans relay behind the fuse box, relays B and C I believe.

Under the red circle, there is a plug that you can pull, that makes the fans come on @ high speed. Pull carefully, as sometimes the plastic is brittle.
(rectangular plug w/ 2 round holes).

Good Luck

Ok, pulled the plug and nothing happened. Does the engine have to be warm, because mine wasn't.

Thx,Craig

Did you test the fan switch?

Pulling the connector should do nothing..... Switch is either good or bad. Same with the fans. Can you disconnect the fans from the harness plug and hot wire them. Are they good?

It looks like both fans are wired independently. Confuses me why both would go at the same time.

Mine won't even come on. They (well, IT), pops the fuse instantly. I was told that I could unplug it and see if a new fuse pops then, but I cannot get the darn thing to unplug.

Good luck to you.

Also try checking the dropping resistor behind the drivers headlite....the leads commonly are toast with rust and crude at this age. Like a $35 part from MB. Just my 2 beans ...BTDT with my M119 this past year.

I think I'm having some electrical issues that may be related. About 6 months ago while I was in a parking garage I noticed that my console and stereo lights would blink on and off when I pressed on the brake. Tonight I took the car for a drive to see if the aux. fans would kick on. They didn't and neither did the flashing console either.

Why would the brake have anything to do with the console lighting? Somethink might be going on behind my dash.

Thanks,

Craig

Hmmm. I notice that you have a 94' E-class. What about your wiring harnesses? Isn't this the years that were plagued with the bad harnesses? Perhaps your problem is looming in there, unless it has been replaced?

Harness was changed by the dealer in 2001 when I bought it. I guess it's time to limp to the mechanic.
