Might be a little noisier but no problems.

I don't have one on my 300CE...although I would like to find one..
I don't see any difference...but they do catch a stray oil drop here and there...and I would imagine provide some sort of under engine protection....

They can also provide better under car aerodynamics. And contrary to popular belief, better cooling system performance. Of course, the drip catching is an added bonus..
![]() The only downside I can think of with them is having to R&R them for oil changes, (unless you use a topsider) which is why they're often missing on the Benzes that get their oil changed at Jiffy lube..

By no means are they necessary. Volvo used to have them then just dropped them completely. Their principal purpose may be to discourage you from working on your own car. I don't know about aerodynamics but the idea that they help with cooling is not just counterintuitive, it's just plain wrong. I have done considering testing on this with two different 124/119s. Take it off - 10 degrees cooler, put it back on, 10 degrees warmer again. MB may have actually been trying to get the cars to run hotter and hence cleaner but it seems to me you want an older used car to run cooler. They also mask fluid leaks which is bad thing.

Yeah, Mercedes puts on unnecessary parts.
Yup, it's a conspiracy to keep you from working on your car. Keep taking parts off and it won't be much of a Mercedes.

The encapsulation panel reduces engine noise and keeps road grime out of the engine compartment. Last week I took a 1995 E320 with a missing encapsulation panel for a PPI ... various components in the engine compartment were corroded from a steady dose of road salt. Needless to say I passed on that purchase.
