Did ALL years for the 300e have head issues?

What year did they dstart with the upgraded head? Reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking of buying a 1990 300se (same motor, right?), and I don't want to be rebuilding the head as soon as I get it. Thanks.

At some point all M103 heads need work. Later heads push out that point.

In general it is preferable to get an old style engine with a recent valve job than a new style engine with a lot of original miles.

Check the service history. If records are not available, offer half the market value.

The 1990 model year M103's have different design heads, pistons, cams, & rocker arms..BUT the valve guides were still the weak link. THEY do require valve jobs.

Here's what attracts me: The car has 90k on the odometer, front end tight, body and interior perfect. It likes to die after running for a few minutes (fuel pump relay, or mas). Nice shape overall. And I really want a gasser s-class, but don't want to be pouring TONS of money in fuel for it (it's a 6 cyl., of course). All electronics work. The guy wants $2k for it. It's been sitting in his driveway for about a year now. I think I can get it for $1200-$1500. I want it!

My 1989 300E has over 327,000 Kms on the original head. I haven't even replaced the valve stem seals or guides. Doesn't burn oil, runs perfectly. Hell of an engine, IMO. If the body is in good shape, and the engine block ok, it would be a good deal for <$2K...
