Upgrading alternators
Will I be able to replace a 1986 300E's 70 amp alternator with a 1992 400E's 110amp alternator without any major modifications?
I amthinking about replacing my viscous fan clutch with a Flex-a-lite electric fan and want the additional alternator capacity to run the electric fan. Thanks. |
Changing from the 70A(Al65X to the 80A(AL66X) is the most common & easiest change.

My alternator gave up and I need one to fix my car over the weekend. My local parts store has one in stock.
But I want to upgrade to an 80 amp alternator. So, are there any distinguishing features between a 70 and 80 amp alternator. That way I can verify that I am buying the higher capacity one. Thanks HS |
Thanks to the posts in the following two threads, I was able to upgrade my alternator to a 143 amp unit from a 1997 S420. If one of you is ever going to swap out your 70Amp alternator, I would strongly suggest reading through these threads as there is a great deal of very good info:
