whats this part

in the back on the right, behind the little door with the first aid kit inside.
on top of the fuel filler tube is an apparatus with a little red plunger, with little tubes running off of it.
what is it?
the reason i asked is i think i overfilled my tank and now i smell gas when i get into my car.

any thoughts?

It's the fuel filler door lock vacuum element that locks the fuel door when you lock the car.

You may want to remove the plastic fuel pump/ filter access cover underneath the vehicle to see if any of the fuel hoses or fittings are leaking before you do anything else.
If there is a heavy leak, you may see visible fuel leaking out of one of the drain holes on the access panel underneath.
If so, you need to get it fixed asap.

Breather vent distribution fitting.
To qualify that...there should be a tube to the neck of the tank to stop blow back when filling.

The tank should be slightly pressurized when in use......if you overfilled it, it is possible the charcoal canister has gotten saturated....wait for a few miles and see if fumes go away.

thanx

thanx fellas, i love this sight
the blowback tube fitting was loose, it has saturated the foam/cloth cover with gas. i tightened it and took the foam cover out and washed it and let it dry.
what i did was keep filling the tank after the pump auto shutoff at gas station.
i learned my lesson.
any more thoughts on that from anyone?

Drain tube is at the base of the filler compartment to drain water out and overflow gas, maybe check that hose inside the 1/4 panel to make sure it's running outside of the car body, just have someone pour a glass of watr in there while you watch inside.
The red knob is for opening the gas flap if the vacuum system fails, good to know where it is.
