Reverse Lights Not working ?? 1988 420sel

My reserve lights are not working on my 420sel. I replaced the nuetral switch recently and still cannot get the ignition to turn the starter so I have ran a hot wire with a ignition switch to the starter. I removed my shifter to check the linkage it all seems ok., There is a wire that runs into the shifter assembly not sure what it is for, it has power go to it, I am not sure if it is a senor or not ?? Any ideas on what to due or look at ??? Help !!

I had same problem when I had my 420sel transmission reinstalled. It was neutural switch. It was misalinged and car would start in park but not in neutural and reverse lights would not work. So I adjusted neutural position switch aligned. It turns if I'm not mistaking. Good luck.

there may be a microswitch in the shifter to engage the backup lights.

you did check the bulbs right?

Replace the fuse while you're at it.

There is a hole on the arm on the neutral safety switch that has to fit into the shifter arm on the trans. Yours is obviously misaligned. It's easy to do because it's dark under there and the little arm cannot be seen.

Put the shifter in '2', get under the car again, remove the shifter arm on the trans and make sure the little arm on the NSS is forward. Make sure the pin fits in the hole and put the clamping bolt back on.

See the hole in the shifter arm:
