I'm looking to replace my faithful 300d, which has about 300,000 miles on it, and is getting rusty. Thanks to the State of Maine and their liquid chloride on the roads all winter long.
So it seems to me that a gas engine shouldn't cost more, because gas is now cheaper than diesel. (A far cry from when I was a kid in the '50's, and gasoline cost $.28/gal, and diesel cost $.09/gal.
But anyway. I was all set to buy a W124 6-cyl, and then have been amazed by the reports at this site of bad wiring, bad traction control, bad AWD, and the daunting aspect of getting a much more complicated car.
Years ago I met a German who was a retired Vice President of MB. We were looking at my car, and talking about MB's in general, and he said that the 123 was the best car MB ever built.
So my question is, should I look for a 280 european car, or a 300? Both seem to be around if you're willing to travel. Are they the same basic engine, the 280 with a twincam head, the 300 a SOHC?
I'm still kicking myself for not going to look at one down in Maryland, a euro 300 with no sunroof, no electric windows, no power seats. I just want a strong car that drives really well. I don't need a science project.
Any opinions would be appreciated.
