400E Dual electric radiator fans not working

Hi,
My dual electric radiator fans just stopped working. I checked the fuses and haven't had time to do anything else. Also know nothing about the wiring on them, where the thermostat is etc. so any troubleshooting or other information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Thos43

A search will reveal all kinds of threads (this type of problem also occurs not only on E class, but S's as well).
First thing you can look at is the fan resistor (behind drivers headlight, under a perforated metal cover - often, the upper wire is corroded/burnt off.
Note that a non working resistor, only causes the low speed fan not to work - you didn't say wether both speeds were inoperative. The high speed fans come on if the engine temp warrants it. There is also a strip fuse that can be cracked/melted. I think on the 400E's it sits on the drivers fenderwell under a black plastic cover. Depending on what month/year yours was made, it could also be next to the brake booster.
Might want to include the year of your 124 next time - at least list it in your profile - this helps A LOT.

Good luck!

These fans are called "auxilliary fans" or "aux fans" for short - search on "aux fans" and you will learn how they work, which will help you troubleshoot the system.

The fans will come on with the a/c and with high temp
so with that if you have a freon leak and it is low enough it will not close
the pressure switch so the fans will only come on but only with a high temp.
this switch is on the high pressure line by the receiver dryer pull the leads
off and touch them together with key on and a/c on the fans should come on
if not your problem's are elseware
post back and let us know if this helped or what you find

400E fan problems

Thanks all, I haven't had an opportunity to try any of your suggestions yet, but I will first chance.
Also, sorry about the lack of detail, it's a 1992 400E.
It's great to know what those fans are called, because I always try to find postings related to whatever problem I may be having, and only post as a last resort. This time, I was searching for radiator fans, and found nothing related. I'll now try aux fans.

Thanks again, I'll report results.

Thank you Larry

Well, I finally got around to what I thought would be a lot of searching, but following the old addage to look in the easiest places first, and Larry's suggestion about the fuse, sort of a fuse link, housed on the firewall, I checked that second and thankfully that was the problem.

Thanks again for all the valuable suggestions.
