Puzzling Transmission leak on 124.
Today we did a few outstanding things on my sons 1988 300TE.
Replaced the front and rear flex disks... rear was still good, but front was bad! Whilst we had it up in the air, we did a transmission service. The car has just tipped over 70,000 miles, but we did not know when the fluid was last changed Drained pan and then Torque converter, removed pan and replaced filter... The old fliud looked clear red and smelt clean and good. Nothing in the bottom of the pan, no bits/grit or silt... All good! The inside of the tranny looked clean and really new. Look at it... this was as soon as I took the pan off, with the old filter still in place... Note the double fluid drip caught in mid air! ![]() ![]() Ok, so it was only when I was looking at the pictures when it was all done and I was relaxing this evening I noticed the leak... Look at the 2nd picture, right at the top on the bellhousing there looks like a rubber cover... the ATF is leaking out of there and running down onto the lowest point. I saw some fluid when I was under there but did not look from this angle... ie the front. and also the flash shows it up better than my old eyes can see in the dark! At the time I took the picture the pan was off and the was no fluid in the transmission. What behind that cover and where is the fluid coming from.
