Squealing '89 300E

I've noticed a squeal coming from under the hood just the past week or so and now it's getting louder. I had the AC compressor and dryer replaced just before this started--so tonight I turned off the AC/Heating and the squeal stopped.

Is this a separate belt or is there only one belt drive for the engine? I don't want to get stranded before I take it back to my indy. TIA.

BTW--I want to compliment Phil for the great customer service here! I was having a problem during my checkout a couple of weeks ago online and my phone rang. It was Phil telling me he was fixing my order. Imagine that!! Thanks so much!

would imagine it to be a loose/dry belt.
check the belt tensioner.

It's probably a loose serpentine belt, (though there are other squealers up there!) Turning off the a/c pretty much confirms it though as the belt being loose.

The belt is tightened by its tensioner, which is adjustable. The tensioners themselves go bad also, shearing the internal rubber part. It can be tested by deflecting it 30 degrees and seeing that it comes back to its original position.

Just one belt, but they normally take a bit after they start squealing before they stop completely, especially with the a/c off.

Get thee to a fixeree!
