Is this a bad way to test a ground?

My turn signals flash quick on the right side. All bulbs fine. Would it be out of the question to gator clip the ground on the bulb socket to the chassis to ensure that I'm getting a proper ground, or am I risking blowing something up? Thanks!

Anyone? I'm an electrical retard...

clips on a meter?

or just plain clips?

Just clips, as in, a wire with clips on each end, one to the ground post on the buld harness, and the other to a known ground. I really just looking to see if there is a problem with the current ground, and want to make sure that the harness is grounding correctly. I do have a meter, also.

try with a meter first, in diode mode (or as I call it, Beep mode...)

What would be the proper steps to test a ground with a meter? Thanks.

one probe on the neg battery connector, and then the other probe on the ground your trying to test.

This is assuming that your car is a neg. ground car. (All benzs' are, to my knowladge - but some cars arnt)

And what kind of readings am I looking for? My meter doesn't beep.

Answer:

If it is an award winning show car, the diagnostic time is worth your effort.

If this is a daily driver; run a new ground from body to bulb socket.

Have a great day. :)

Awsome, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Possible high resistance ground

<<one probe on the neg battery connector, and then the other probe on the ground your trying to test.>>

With a flashing light, this won't work well with a digital meter because they respond too slowly. However, since the parking light filament uses the same ground, just turn them on, connect the meter in DC volts mode and go from the negative battery post to the brown wire in the lamp connector and the meter will read the voltage drop in the wiring to the ground stud which should be very low because of the short run. You could do this on the left side as a comparison so you know what drop to expect. The ground stud is most likely on the fender well nearby. Maybe.

Matt, remove the right side turn signal lamps and inspect the base. If it looks like someone filed the base at an angle replace the lamps with new 21w lamps and see if that corrects the problem. New lamps should be Osram Sylvania to ensure there are no problems with incorrect wattage lamps. Remove/replace the left lamps, as required.
