I would like to do a tune-up on my car. I am somewhat car savvy. Is there anything that I need to do special when it comes to a tune-up on this car? I plan on buying dealer parts. Should I just change plugs and wires? Is there a rotor? Is it in the distributor cap? Any and all information would be appreciated.

You may purchase the parts from us. Most of the ignition parts are made by Bosch which we sell!
You will find a distributor cap and rotor on the front of the engine. You will need a good set of allen SOCKETS in 1/4" drive and some extensions to get to the bolts. The cap is held on with 3 5mm bolts and the rotor with 3 3mm bolts. The plugs are standard copper core Bosch. DO NOT USE PLATS!!!!!!! |
Hi Benzmac, Why do you advice against using platinum spark plugs?? I currently have these (bosch platinum) in my 92 190e and the car is running much smoother now than when it had the regular plugs. Please advise. Thanks

SMK Texas,
Do a search on it. You will find a vast amount of information. Mercedes-Benz directly forbids the use of the platinum plugs. The search should help you understand why. |
David, Do a search where? I too would like to know why plats should not be used.
What about special wires? Jason |
Go up to the top of tha page, and you'll see SEARCH on the right hand side. You'll find a wealth of info on the matter. Good luck.

Important safety tip
Be carefull removing the spark plug wires. If this is the first time they are taken off the plugs they may not come off the plugs easly. Make sure you pull the boot, not the wire. Twisting the boot first may not loosen it, it may not loosen at the top of the spark plug cause the contact can turn on its own. And you can't buy just one, they only come is sets. And they do sell a handy tool to take them off. I think loosening the plug wires should be part of the regular maintance.

I tried Bosch platinum plugs on my 190E and the car did not perform right. It would miss and backfire with no rhyme or reason. I went to to local authorized distributer of Bosch parts and they told me that the Mercedes Benz engines with the high voltage ignition systems did not like the platinum spark plugs. I immediately switched back to the OEM Bosch plugs with the miss and backfire gone.
