Help, can't shift out of park
 

1996 E300 Key will turn and car will start. Can't remove key from ignition, can't shift car out of park. I am pressing on brake and have tried moving everything around with no luck. Cable to ignition switch? Bad ignition? I am lacking any real skills but am willing to give it a go. Any help would be appreciated and write like you are talking to a third grader.

Probably a faulty brake switch. Check behind the brake pedal.

That year has 2 cables going to the shifter..1 from the brake pedal & 1 from the ignition switch.
