Question Bilstein shocks
 

I am posting in this forum because I think I may have a better chance of getting a clear answer. The Mercedes-Benz is a 1992 W124 300-E factory Sportline. I am looking at firming up the ride just a touch. Does Bilstein make a sport shock for my car that replaces the factory shocks and would give me a
more taunt suspension. The car only has 38,000 miles so I do not think the bushing are bad . It has new Michelin VR rated tires the same factory size as orginal. however I think ride Vs handling is what I am getting from these tires.

Bob, the Bilstein Sport is used on lowered cars. Some amount of lowering is permitted with the standard HD shock, you'd have to check with Bilstein to dertermine how much drop is OK before turning to the Sport shock.

so if his car is a sportline it must have the sport bilsteins already.

if he wants something stiffer he may need to go to a koni adjustable.

I have a '92 W124 Factory Sportline. I changed front and rear shocks to Bilstein Sports. The Factory Sportline shocks may be Bilstein but they are not the same as the Bilstein Sports. Compression is slightly stiffer on the Bilstein Sports.

I also had a '93 Factory Sportline at the same time. Therefore, I was able to
confirm that the additional stiffness was not simply due to worn original shocks on the '92. The '93 was smoother than the '92 with the Bilsteins.

My opinion is that the Factory shocks are a better compromise between handling and stiffness. If you want slightly more stiffness get the Bilsteins.
I don't think it will improve the handling much.

Did my homework on this some time ago. ;)
Bilstein says you can use regular ( length ) shocks, when lowering up to 1", which the Sportline suspension is supposed to be.
Anything over 1" they recommend shortened shaft ( Sport ) shocks, to retain full shock travel.
