window adjustment/repair 124

I have checked the DIY articles on door panel removal but I wonder if someone would help me diagnose before I remove the panel. I would like to have the parts on hand if possible to fix the problem while the panel is off.

My drivers side window will roll up to the point where it touches the top seal but will not travel the last quarter inch (I can push it up easily with my hands on both sides of the glass). There is a quick loud rat tat tat when it reaches the top of its travel. The noise continues as long as I continue to press the up switch. The noise sounds like it is coming from just below the lock knob behind the door panel.

If someone knows what I'll be repairing I could go ahead and order the parts and just remove the panel one time. Any help appreciated. Thanks for the DIY articles too. I did not see any DIY on actual window repairs or adjustments but if someone can point it out if one exists I would be grateful.
I have a 1994 e320 wagon.

Ray

Your window regulator has lost gear teeth and needs to be replaced. You're on the right track.

Window regulator...

This is what you need. You are lucky...you can buy separate from window motor. This site has them...

Remove the door panel - it's held with 9 or 10 clips that hook onto the door (Removing: inside leather mirror cover, plastic door pin, plastic light at the bottom, and two screws surrounding the door lock itself.) Pull up gently from bottom and sides, back and forth until you get the bottom end/half of the panel open, you can disconnect the bottom door light here if you wish.

Reach inside to the top and push up since the top portion is held tightly with four/five clips attached to the metal panel. Then just set the panel down somewhere and remove the speaker's screws.

To replace the panel, just backtrack.

So does this mean I need a regulator.? Is the item picture in the other post a regulator or some other part of the assembly.

thanks,
Ray

However, when I visited this link I could see only a very low res image of the assembly and could not make out the writing or figure out how to get a better image for viewing off the imageshack site.

I did find the part at fast lane and answers to a couple of questions I posted earlier. I wonder if replacing the regulator is straightforward enough so that I will understand the procedure as soon as I look behind the door panel or if i need to find more information on the procedure. ( I could not "see" the procedure referenced in an earlier response)..
Any thoughts appreciated and thanks to all for your patience and info.

It would be nice to have either the service CD or the Haynes manual - either or both of which will prove a good investment if you plan to do much DIY work.

Thanks to all for help on changing my first window regulator. The DIY page Skiier on door panel removal was a big help. I did download a service manual from manuals unlimited but the indexing is pretty difficult to non existent. I think I saw a thread somewhere on the forum offering an index. I did find the window regulator but the manual was not too useful in terms of helping me replace it. The information was just to brief and not well illustrated. I did visit Fast Lane and they had the part priced as well or better than most and shipped it free and it arrived the following day. I did notice there is a view port so you can inspect the gear teeth as you raise or lower the window after removing the panel and liner. Mine was missing several in one spot. The job took me about 2.5 hrs but I'm sure it could have been done in one if I had it to do over. The hardest part was getting the door panel back on with all the hooks in place. I had a great deal of satisfaction from fixing it myself and I suppose I could have even paid myself a decent wage and still saved some money over having someone else do it. Thanks again to all who make this site so helpful.
