When these Volvo's had these problems, did the noise immediately disapear after you hit the brake.

Also , is there a way to post a sound on this website?

you said this sound started right after having the tires rotated?
it could just be the wear on the tires.
if the tread is a little uneven the tires will sometimes make a moaning sound at certain speeds which i would guess is because the tire is burning down the uneven threads. if you can not find the source of the problem i would suggest rotating the tires from front to back just to see if the noise moves. but that's just a wild guess :)

THanks Jeff, but the noise occured 3 days after the tires were rotated. IF it had to do with the tires, then why would it immediately stop after the brake is hit.

Whether it has something to do with the tires, time will tell in about 1 1/2 months when the wheels are rotated again.

Last year my '89 420 SEL started making howling and screeching noises in the back that brake application stopped. I finally ran it down to rust build-up in the inner drum of the rotor causing contact. I put on new rotors and e-brake shoes and haven't heard a thing since.

We took the wheels off and it did not look like anything was out of the ordinary, but you never know. Was glad that the noise stopped? How much did the rotors run you?

I got rotors for $56 each, new. Can't remember the shoe price.

I had the same problem and it was the emergency brake drum. Seemed to be rusty and after sanding, several times, the "singing" noise was eliminated.
