'91 300E Stuck In Park - Electron. or Mech.

Hello all,

I have a 1991 300E with an Automatic Trans., which is stuck in Park. I have read several posts which discuss stuck shifters in newer models, and seem to result from liquid getting into the gear selector. My vehicle has is a specific warning label on the gear selector stating “Brake Peddle must be depressed to shift from Park”, therefore I assume there is some sort of interlink between the brake peddle and the shift selector.

QUESTION:

If I am correct about the existence of an interlock, is it mechanical via a cable, or electrical via some sort of release solenoid? If I am wrong on all accounts, and the shift selector is electronic, I would appreciate being put straight on that as well. Any direction would be helpful.

Thanks for your time!
