I do believe that is the cabin air fan which draws air over the cabin air temp' sensor and allows the heat setting to remain constant to your 'Temp' wheel' setting.
I think the air is drawn from the reading light assembly forward of the sun roof. There's a little grill up there that gets blocked and causes temp' fluctuations on AUTO. Anybody ? .

Correct that it is the air temp sampler fan. Mine looked like the fan had been pushed against the motor housing causing it to make noise. I just stuck a screwdriver in and slid the fan out on the shaft a little so it would not touch the housing. No more noise. I had to remove the fan to do this but it isn't difficult. The fan moves easily on the shaft.
