Differentials
Hello all,
Long time no post! I wonder if anyone knows this - what is the cost of a rebuild of the differential in a 16v 190e? I have heard some say that it is up to $1500-2000 but do not understand why - are they unique or particularly special? What about for a 2.5-16 which is what I have. Mine has the ASD - does that mean it is the same diff as in a 300E with ASD, and if so how much does it cost to rebuild one of these? Is it more because of the ASD, I am hoping it would be less because it's a more 'mainstream' component borrowed from the W124. |
i am no expert on rebuilding diffs but i think the parts just to do the limited slip is around 700. then you have misc parts such as bearings seals and gaskets. and someone with the tools to spend a day rebuilding it at 75 per hour or more. the 1500 to 2000 doesnt seem out of line.
i dont know about the asd. tom w |
Look on the Rev mate. Chris Martens is having his rebuilt, and there are sooo many small parts involved it's ridiculous. As Tom said, parts alone I believe cost him about 800 Euros, and then the time to rebuild is a lot of hours...

I'd suggest that you buy a used one with the same part number.

Thanks I will look on the rev :).
Chris Martens has a fairly early 2.3-16 I believe. I have heard the later cars have a less special LSD? I don't know if this is true though? Do 300Es with ASD have an (10%) LSD effect as well as the ASD? |
Used ASD/LSD diffs will be useless, as they will also need a rebuild. Trust me... I bought two of them. Both were 99% open, 1% locked. The one in my car is the same way. I'm working on rebuilding it myself right now. The parts will cost $300-$400 total, plus some special tools (which can be fabricated). A good rear-end shop should be able to do this for more like $1000, not $1500-$2000... that sounds really high. ASD diffs have 35% lock (when new!) without hydraulic pressure, and near 100% lock with hydraulic pressure.
Photos of my current project are here: http://www.w124performance.com/images/W124_diffs/185mm/ I'm hoping to have it back on the road by the end of May. |
