i have an 88 190e 2.6l and theres this white light on the right side of the steering wheel keeps coming and staying on. It has no letters on it or symbols so id just like to know what it means

Herr Leber 05-07-2001 03:44 PM

Ya got me. Is it on the gauge cluster itself or off to the side? Maybe its an idiot lite that lost the plastic gel.

Can you be more specific?

itzkorn 05-07-2001 04:00 PM

its in the gauge cluster...like where the check engine light is only further left

If it sits in line with all the other check lights, your car is missing a part of the check lights displays. There are two plastic strips shoved in the cluster (one from each side) and these strips contain the check whatever lights. You probably miss a part of the righter plastic strip...

greetingz,

Alright, here is the lineup...
The indicator lamps that are located on the right side of the thermometer/clock adjuster are as follows:

From left to right- 1. ASD, 2. Fluid level for windshield, 3. ABS Malfunction, 4. SRS- Safety Restraint system malfunction, 5. O2 Sensor (california version only) and 6. Check Engine.

Hope it helps.

it is the ASD light then. what does that mean?

Herr Leber 05-08-2001 09:11 AM

Automatic Locking Differential. As per the 1993 owners manual,

" The automatic locking differential engages when there is a difference in speed (slip)during accelaration between the front and rear wheels of over 1.2 MPH and the vehicle speed is less than 15.6 MPH. It will disengage at speeds above 16.2 MPH".

It also says bring it in to the dealer if the light stays on. My car is an 84 so I am not familiar with that system.

Mine does the same thing. Its a blank red light between
srs light and check engine light. It blinks ones in a
while and never pay attention to it.Even the owners
manual doesnt say anthing about it.Now Im concern.
I even earch the C.D.Cant find any explanation.
What could it be? Anybody?

Was ASD even an option on an 88? ANd if so, the chances of it having it are slim to none on a 190E. Can someone give directions on how to tell if he has it?
See if you see a triangle in the center of the speedometer, does something every light up there?

chowpit 05-08-2001 08:39 PM

Do the warning lights on either side light up when the ign is turned on (e.g., ck eng light)? If one does not that would indicate that the bulb is in the incorrect socket behind the cluster. ASD was not available on the 190E.

Clauser1 05-08-2001 10:12 PM

Mine is 1990 2.6.
No,theres no triangle on the
center of the speedometer.
What is ASD?

ASD is an archaeic form of Traction control. It's actually an ANTI-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL. It came before ASR. It's just a limited slip differential. Your car doesn't have it.

Does this so called 'light' light up when you put the key in the ignition to the ON position but don't start it?

Clauser1 05-08-2001 10:33 PM

Yes dave.

I have one of those blank lights too. It's for the steering column. If it's not locked in place, it will let you know. It never comes on other wise.... the culprit must be on the end where the whatever option is hooked.
Who knows, maybe something is shorting.

white light

sounds to me as if someone switched the position of the SRS light to the wrong socket
