5000rpm Cutout 560SEL

The problem is that in every gear the motor won't spin more than 5k like it was electronically limited. I can understand this in high gear but in kickdown mode it won't shift to the next higher gear.
When passing etc, you have to blip the accelerator to force a shift
and this is NOT normal as it should turn 6k easy.

I have a 560 SEL 1988. My mom gave it to me 2 years ago. I have drove it before and it would never go beyond 5000rpm for the past 6 years with all maintenance up-to-date(until 2 years ago and 6k miles ago since I got the car). The car has 181,000 miles on it, and NO lights are ON now after replacing OVP relay today that caused high idle(1500rpm) and ABS light on(thanks for the fix on this site!). I have the car perfect now, except for it won't go beyond 5000rpm(even in park it cuts out at 5000rpm sharp!) Any suggestions would be great! thanks...

I would check the fuel pump relay, it should say 6000K on it, if not you have the wrong relay and thus improper rev limit.

Mine's doing a bit similar, although at a bit lower RPM, about 4k. The spark is very weak, so I'm planning on changing the coil. My fuel economy is also very poor.
Leads, cap and arm are new, so the only thing left is the coil!

The fuel pump relay is most likely problem (as suggested). should be marked as a 8 cylinder & list the cut-out RPM.

My FPR doesn't say 6000k on it. Thanks, I think I found the problem!

My old 420SEL did this. It turned out the cats were clogged.
