1990 300 te 4 matic fule tank issue

Hello again, i have recently noticed a fuel leak coming from what seems to be the fuel tank and i am trying to locate a fuel tank , called the dealer and guess what ?
$1500 Can. geez i wonder how much markup they are getting ?
any ways is there anyone who can direct me to a less costly alternative , seems that 300 te models and te 4matic tanks are one in their own for this model , sedan tanks will not work, at least that is what the dealer tells me!
I am keeping an eye out for a used one, but that is a gamlbe in its own , HELP!!
My Family car stinks of fuel , and have no real other mode of transport for my full family .

are you sure its the tank and not a fuel line?have you had the car on the hoist for an inspection?i have replaced several lines in close vicinity to the tank.it would be easy to misdiagnose:)

right now leak is at rear of tank and no hoses there?

THANK YOU FOR A QUICK REPLY , I HAVE YET TO LIFT THE CAR IN THE AIR TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM, I HAVE NOTICED THE SMELL AND LOOKED UNDER the car to see where it could be leaking , right now I see it leaking at thee rear of the tank by the 2nd muffler. and the side by the fillling tube. I am lucky enough to have a parts guy at mercedes give me a blowup dissected views of the fuel system and from what i can read it seams as though there is no lines or fittings that could be loose,at the rear of the tank

i have posted this at another forum and have been directed to http://www.gastankrenu.com/.
I really appreciate the link and i wll establish where the leak is before buying any parts of course.

I still am having a hard time locating any other source of fuel tanks (rebuilt or new
aftermarket).

I will look into this repair a gas tank site and gather more info .

Me too. I'm not a professional mechanic but I've worked on lots of 124s and 123s diesel and gas and it's always been a deteriorated fuel line. Check real carefully as was suggested.

I don't know what a reconditioned tank costs but a new one from a dealer should be $600.
