Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement

I found this good German thread with photos on the R&R of the 124 rear wheel bearing. It should be applicable to the 202, 210 etc.

Wheel Bearing R&R

ALso a good opportunity to brush up on your Deutsch.

I do bearing failure analysis for a living. I can see that the bearing he took out suffered brinelling (impact damage), which resulted in the spall pattern.

that "mechanic" is pretty much a HACK.. never use air tool on pullers. damage to that type of Roll threads will damage the puller. also the installation of the bearing & flange are critical OR the new bearing will be damaged.."brindled"

Does show "how" but care is not a priority to that guy.

Agreed he's not a "profi" but he says:
"Ich höre schon die Zweifler, die uns das Schänden der Bremsschläuche vorwerfen... Jaja, die gehören an Haken irgendwo festgehakt... Andererseits, wenn man die Bremssättel vorsichtig abhängt, dann passiert da auch nix. Wenn der Schlauch jetzt Risse zeigen würde, dann hätte ich eh nicht mehr damit fahren wollen..."
"I already hear the doubters who accuse us of damage to the brake hose ... yeah yeah they belong on a hook somewhere .. on the other hand, if you hang the caliper gently aside, then nothing happens. If the hose would develop cracks, then I wouldn't want to drive with it anyway"

and:
"Es ist wichtig, dass das Lager präzise und ohne Verkanten eingezogen wird."
"It is important that the bearing be precisely, and not at an angle, drawn in"

Personally I liked the site because that job has to be the most poorly described thing I've ever seen in WIS or similar manuals. The usual black and white cross section requires a vivid imagination to interpret correctly.

The other thing to remember is that most high-mileage MB's in Germany are driven as taxis, and their owners keep them alive repairing them like this.
