87 300sdl hot flashes

We have had problems with the a/c. At moderate setting on the temperature in auto mode, the a/c comes on high and cold, staying on and occasionally going to a warm mode just after the blower reduces speed. It will then go back to cold. I have traced vacuum lines and replaced a leaking Y fitting, along w/detached fresh air control chamber. I would like input on what to look for...could it be the temperature sensor going bad?
