Question Vibration when stopped and in "D".

Great active forum here.

2000 E320 rwd

When the car is at a stop and in "D" there is a moderate vibration in the steering wheel and the body. The vibration is present just before stopping completely and constantly while fully stopped. If any other gear is selected when at a stop the vibration goes away completely. There are no vibrations when driving. The rpm is just a hair over 500 in "D" when at a stop. The check engine light is not on.

Any ideas?

Thank you for your replies.

The motor mounts are original. The vehicle is approaching 90k.

I changed the plugs with Bosch iridium at 70k, the wires are original.

Any further comments are greatly appreciated.

Engine mounts and possibly the transmission mount.

You should check the engine mounts first before deciding to replace them.

It is easy enough to check, put one foot firmly on the brake and give a little gas with the other foot with the engine in drive. Look at the engine and notice if one side moves more then about 1". Repeat except put the car in reverse. The other side of the engine should not move more then 1". If one of the mounts is bad you will see one side move considerably more then the other side. If this is the case then replace both mounts.

Another way to check is look at the support rails below the engine mounts, if you see dark brown residue then it is from the engine mounts leaking. Of only one mount is leaking the replace both mounts.

BTW, with 124 series engines, the Bosch iridium (4 electrodes) don't work very well. I don't know how these work with your engines. You might want to check the forum and see.

The standard plug is a single electrode platinum, I believe.

vibration at start up while in gear.

if vibration is heavy at start up after being put in drive..(NOT WHILE IDLEING AND NOT IN GEAR)(engine still cold when put in gear) and much reduced but barely felt after car warms up while driving, can it still be motor mounts? replaced all ignition parts plugs, wires, coils.MAS about 20000 ago.

Yes, because the engine wants to rotate when gears are engaged.
