1987 260E: replacing the muffler

By the way, since I will be having the car jacked up on a hoist (renting one from the garage shop). I would like to replace the muffler as it is aging. I have the muffler & clamp & hanger. Is this an easy job? Does the old clamp comes out easily? or do you have to fire the blow torch at it to loosen it up? Any issues I should be aware off? Thx

I have always had muffler shop do this, using mufflers that I supplied. One issue is that the Center Resonator and the rear muffler came from the factory as one piece. So, if it has never been replaced, it will have to be cut. The chain store muffler places wouldn't touch it, so I found a little muffler shop. They did it cheap, as in 60 bucks.

Next issue is that the fore to aft location of the new muffler is critical and spelled out in the factory manual.

It appears then that the ones on my car isn't original. I can see two distinct pieces, teh resonator and rear muffler are joined together by a c-clamp or something.

It's two separate parts with an obvious joint on our '90 and '91 models. Original equipment.
