Engine removal without transmission 500SEL

Does anybody know if its possible to remove the M117 engine from a W126 without pulling the transmission?
Sorry if its a stupid question, but does the engine just slide forward from the transmission, leaving the torque convertor behind? After its slid forward, is there enough room to lift it?

When I took the engine from my 560 SEC last weekend, I pulled the two as a complete unit, as described in the workshop manual. I managed to leave the condenser in place too. It came out, but was tight.

The section about removing the transmission from the engine is missing in my shop manual, else that would have probably answered my questions.
