No avoiding it any longer - the 300E needs a rear muffler. What was once a nice sort of growl has become a plain old annoying noise. I plan to go through Partsshop on this and they list the following:

Eberspaecher $175.89
Bosal $222.14
Ansa $182.37

Are there any recommendations? I would like it to be quiet, not hurt performance, and look stock. In this range price is not an issue.

TIA

Go with the Eberspaecher it is original equipment for MB and also seems to be the less expensive

Eberspeacher...even in Europe!
Like the partdr said: it is original equipment factory-mounted by MB.

Success!

Just to close the loop. Bought the rear muffler by Eberspaecher from Fastlane. Delivered on-time for twelve bucks, installed with no hassles, fits perfectly, sounds fine. Highly recommend it for someone needing a stock replacement.

BTW - The muffler was OK. The noise was coming from a hole on the top side of the pipe at the bend just before it enters the muffler. Is this a common failure?
