1997 E320 head gasket leaking
I just changed the tranny fliud and filter in my 97 e320, while I was under the crate turning the torque converter around to be drained, I noticed oil coming from around the head gasket. Can anyone shed some light on this, can the head bolts be retorqued, if so what is the torque specs and sequence? Or does the head gasket need replaced, can someone show me how to do it? If it's not coming from the valve cover gasket, then it is the head gasket. No you can't re-torque.
Yes, you will have to replace headgasket. It's obviously do able, but not a simple as many cars. Variable valve timing, etc. Here's a link http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic100345.html Steve |
Thanks softconsult, any suggestions on where to but the gasket set?

No, 1996 and 1997 E320's have the inline-6 M104 engine. |
do the valve cover gasket set before you condemn the head gasket.

Because of the stretching properties, you should NEVER re-use the head bolts. You will need a new set if you plan to tackle this job. |

Very common on M104 engines,
On a good note, the valve guides/seats hold up very well. Just R&R the gasket and do valve seals while the heads are off(easy). it should only need a headgasket-nothing else unlike M103's. Michael |
where can I but the head bolts and valve guides

Thanks Sam, I am ordering the parts today and as soon as it gets warm up here, I'll get started.

Make sure it is the head gasket, not just the front timing cover. Look for the front of the engine on the passenger side. If the leak starts there, very good chance it is the timing cover. It will be an external leak (a couple drops per night) and it should not affect the performance or longevity.
