need dolly to tow a 260e/300e benz?
car stat: 1987 260E
I am just curious, do you really need a dolly attached to the rear wheel to tow a W124 (260E/300E) series benz? I need a tow and the company I called mentioned that they need to put a dolly onto the rear wheels because its rear-wheel drive. Anyway wouldn't it be possible to tow the car from teh rear? i.e. hook up whatever contraptions and lift the car up to the tow truck from the rear end. Thereby having the car front wheels spining freely on the road, I don't see why they can not do it this way? Thx |
I think your supposed to use a flatbed.

I think you will be OK.
Just use common sense. Let them pull it in N outside and then hook up. The length of the tow and type of equip the operator has will determine the type of truck they use. Longer tow (25 mi) = Flat bed Med tow = Dolly w/rear wheels down Short tow = front wheels down |
my 300sd was towed on dollies once and it was ok. once they know its a rear wheel drive the drivers never bring a flatbed anyway.

I was supposed to drive my 300E out to my indie this weekend for the head gasket repair. Unfortunately, a blown heater hose prevented any chance of driving.
The indie arrived at my house with a two-wheel dolly. He backed the car over to the dolly and secured the rear wheels, letting the fronts roll freely. He's a very fastiduous MB tech, so if he had no qualms with that type of towing technique, then I should think that yours will be fine as well. |
