Alternator Output
hi everybody
ihave 300E 1989 my old alternator had 70 amps output after having problems with the low amps i decide to upgrade the alternator to higher amps so i got this alternator from the salvage yard pulled from mercedes 8v engine old car the only thing i had to replaced the cable from the alternator to the battery and the pully on the new alternator changed with mine . after starting the car the output of the new alternator : battery voltage at rest 12.60 at idle with no load *** 14.35 at idle fully loaded (lights ,defroster,hi blower, radio,) it droped to 12.30 after 5 min at 2000 rpm fully loaded 13.59 and no drop in voltage . *** here is my question 14.35 output at idle is that ok or is it too hi is the voltage too hi to burn the electrical computers on the car ? any help will be appreciated |
12 to 14.4V is nominal...any higher and you have a voltage regulator issue...

Alternator Output
thank you for the replay G-Benz
like i mentioned i just took the alternator from the junk yard and i was not sure what amps rated this alternator there is no stamp on it or on the voltage regulator ( rectangelar type regulator) one more question is there any way that i can check the amps output on the alternator without remove it from the car to find out what type of alternator i got. thank you agin G-Benz |
Shops with diagnostic equipment (Jiffy Lube, etc.) could probably give you that answer.
You probably have an 80-amp unit if you found a salvage unit that is more powerful than the original. I suppose the alternator responds to load requirements, and therefore would not put a constant 80-amp load unless necessary. After all, the regulator tries to maintain a steady voltage, so the amp load would have to vary according to demand. |
Alternator Output
thank you again G-Benz
i drove my car today for 50 miles with no problem every thing ok checked the alternator output after stopped it was 14.25 at idle . any way i,ll take it to jiffy lube to check the output so i can replace it in the future with the same type.i think it is 80 amps as you mentioned. thank you again |
