C220 Oil filter
Stupid question but where is the oil filter on a C220 1994? I have a card cartridge type new one but I can’t see where it goes. Do I have to dismantle anything ect??

The filter housing is part of the front engine cover..you need to remove the black plastic cover to access the filter.

Great questions, getting ready to change mine on my c220 I just bought. If I am not mistaken, it is in the oil pan itself, you have to loosen a bolt and it drops down. I THINK that is how it is done, I am sure someone here knows.

Mine is the C230, 1997, which I think is the same engine layout. The filter canister you seek has a round, nearly smooth black cap on it.
Stand in front of the car. At the top front of the engine you'll see a wide black cover with the star on it. Don't remove this. Look to the right, and you'll see the oil filter canister and its cap, to the left of the power steering reservoir. A hose may run partly over the cap, but just shift it a little, don't dismantle it. The cap comes off with a filter cap wrench, available from your friendly MB dealer (or from Advance Auto Parts for a lot le$$), attached to your trusty socket wrench. One end of the filter itself fits into this cap, so when you unscrew the cap and lift, the old filter should come with it. Fit your new filter into the canister; it can only go in one way. Don't forget to snug the rubber o-ring provided with your filter around the cap before you screw it back down onto the canister and tighten it with your socket or torque wrench. After you refill the crankcase with oil and run the engine, check for leaks. That's it! |

C class oil changes are probobly amoung the easiest and fastest to do. I can take my bottom protecter sheild off and drain the oil without raising the car...and this is with a lowered car awell. I never raise my car and have no problems, just have to be able to reach. But the BMW 5 series is a pain, its so low i have to jack it up, otherwise the drain plug can't be reached even if you had andre the giants arms....

Only thing with changing oil in the C220 is whether to use the rubber o-ring that comes with the filter cartridge. I have never used it because once when I did, quite a bit of oil leaked out thru the cap. It appears the cap has to just tight so as not to squeeze the o-ring. I decided not to take the risk of figuring out the proper torgue. My cap does not leak without the o-ring.

It is hard to believe it does not leak without the O ring. Are you sure you know where the O ring goes? The fact that you say it leaked with the O ring suggests maybe you were putting it the wrong place?

don't know where else to put it. Does it not just slip on to the cap, or may be.... it goes inside the cannister..... which I did not try. But I slipped it on the cap, tightened it and unbeknownst to me, it slipped out and leaked:eek:

But did you remove the old one first?
