Hi G-Benz,

sorry for getting back to my question. Are all the works you got done can be considered engine total overhauling or is there anything else which can be done? (not must be done)

Suffice to say, my indie, felt that it was more of a "top-end" rebuild. Even with the piston and cylinder wall polishing, I will agree with him.

What was done here does not address the bottom end...crankshaft, main and rod bearings, etc. Not nearly a total overhaul

Thanks brewtoo,

if what you said is true, then there is no chance for me to have a total overhaul, which could easily cost more than what my 1989 300CE is worth .

What's wrong with your 300CE and why do you think that you need a complete overhaul?

I have a 300TE with 209k miles and it hums along.

If you think you need a complete overhaul, you may consider an engine swap.

The bottom ends on these engines are practically bulletproof. Aside from doing the timing chain later in life, I don't see any need to tear into the rest of the motor down for any significant work!

I'm hoping to double my total miles on this motor before I consider it boneyard fodder!

True. Click here for evidence of how robust these engines are:

just a queston to why

ok i admit i have lots to learn,so i ask questions.
what logic would a engine builder use to determine it is correct to polish a used cylinder with a hand hone?

Actually I got no big problems except for sluggish performance, slow acceleration, hard to reach 100mph, high oil consumption. So I thought an engine overhaul might help, but apparently I am wrong.

It would help, but probably overkill for the symptoms you've described.

Sounds like a full-circle tune-up would take care of a lot of those issues. The oil consumption could be vave stem seals, which I believe can be done without removing the head.

I could be off base on all of this, but a complete overhaul is such a drastic (and expensive) step, when 99.999% of the issues can be addressed on the top end.

Sort of like getting a heart transplant, when the problem was the flu. The first step is to take the car to a specialist, MB mechanic, and pay them to diagnose the causes of the actual problem(s). This is by far the most cost effective approach.

I know that when my '92 300E had a major out town break down at around 180K, the local MB shop first did the diagnosis, then I approved the repairs. It involved a leaking EHA, bad coil, suspect MAS relay. Totalled about $2400.00, which is what? 4 car payments.
Car has run like a champ ever since and is now at 242K.

As someone working with computer I have very limited automotive knowledge and DIY skills and have a lot to learn from the forum.
Since I came across this site I spend 1-2 hours daily reading the postings, new and old. Everyday I know a little bit more about my car.

Great forum! Thumbs up!

G-Benz,

Do you have any oil consumption after the repair.

Haven't driven enough miles to determine (less than 1000)...but so far, the dipstick reads full and there is ZERO leakage on the ground...which prior to the rebuild appeared as if it left 1/2 quart puddles wherever the car was parked.
