Mobile 1 0W40 for W220
Hi guys,
I am going to start the oil thread again. It is about to change my oil and I was shopping for mobile 1 0W40 and realized the new bottles which I found at auto shop do not indicate any MB229.3 or 229.5 certification. It says only Mercedes AMG. I don't think it is the same specification. I am hesitating now and looking for other brands, which specify 229.3 or 229.5 I am thinking to use Amsoil 5W40. How do you guys think? Appreciate for all inputs. |

On your car, any of those would be fine. I believe a c220 would fall under the old 229.1 spec....if not something prior. What I would be more concerned about are leaks. A synthetic at that thin of a weight will probably begin leaking if you're on the original head gasket. It just flows better. How many miles? My suggestion would be Mobil 1 15w50 extended life.

Will,
Sorry for if I make you confused. My car is W220 2000 S500 with 70k miles. I was using M1 0W40 for several years and I always check bottles before I buy. It was always specified 229.3 or 229.5 until recently the bottle indicates MB AMG, which made me a little concern. Thanks for your reply. |

Sorry, I read C220, not W220. Not sure about the spec change. I DID hear in a recent thread that M1 was changing its base stock from group 4 to group 3 (is that the proper terminology? anyone?) Interesting. Where are the oil gurus?

Uberwgn,
Thanks for your link. The main problem is these specific oils are not easy to find. Timfreeh, Yes, it does. |

bowin, why not defer to the mfr's list of approved oils?
http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html There are plenty of 229.x oils out there!
