When buying used, is 4matic a good thing?

I'm still looking for a 300E - just like the looks.

Found 1991 300E with 4matic.

Are there "real" benefits to driving a 4matic?

Are they more prone to malfunction?

In short, all things being equal - is a 4matic better?

Not trying to be cute, but if you simply type "300E 4 Matic" into the Search field you will be well on your way towards learning why you may want to avoid the early 4-matics.

Stay away from first generation 4Matic. Very prone to trouble, very expensive to fix. Second generation 4Matic (from 99 onwards in the E) is simple, reliable and definitely adds to the safety in snow or rain.

Expensive to repair, only MB can diagnose, stay away from the early version.

The only good 4-matic is that used in 1996-2002 E class cars.
