Where's the EGR valve??
Hey guys...need you thoughts on this.
First off I have a question whether this car, a 500SEC with a manufacture date of 3/1984, ever had an EGR valve. Researching the receipts that came with the car I discovered the car was origonally shipped to San Francisco. With an ultimate destination of Bend Oregon. California law states any vehicle offloaded here is to be smog compliant. And the federal and state stickers in the engine compartment confirm the vehicle is compliant. It has all the breather tubes and new smog pump. However, my confusion to all this is an EGR valve is listed for this year and model available online thru Phil, or Rusty's at MBParts.com, or Driveline or Performance parts. Yet I have searched as thorough as I could and can find no such part on the exhaust manifold. Or evidence that one had been removed. To further my confusion, a smog test was required on the vehicle to transfer ownership to me. And it passed!! At the time I did not even consider asking the smog tech. So another test is on the horizon. And since the last test I have virtually replaced every part having to do with emmissions. Except the EGR valve. I am already happy that the car passed once , but I would really like to know if this car is supposed to have one or where is it hiding. I have traced every vacuum line too from it's source to it's destination. No Egr. Thanks for your time... |

The EGR valve on my 420SEL is on the drivers side exhaust manifold. If it's not there, you probably have a flat spot on the exhaust manifold that's not machined. My 300SE has this flat spot but no EGR valve.
