1990 560sel clogged fuel distributor

i have read on other post that the screens get clogged, where are these screens located. what are they made of steel, alum? and of course how do you get them out?

jhodg5ck 03-22-2007 08:31 PM

Gen II (ie, 560's, 420's) don't have screens. Only gen I (non CIS E) cars have screens.

I would seriously consider a re-manufactured FD..

so what gets clogged then? i have a friend suggested using some form of acid to break ther rust out, good idea or crazy idea?

jhodg5ck 03-22-2007 08:50 PM

No!@ :dizzy2: I would not use acid..you have rubber baffles/seals in there and there is no telling what the acid will do. If your baffle is torn the FD won't work right, if seals are blown out it won't work right.. there are VERY fine orifices in the FD (did you have a look @ the pics on my page) so they may be clogged &/or corroded.

If any DIY'er has had luck reviving their FD on their own I would love to hear it.

Thanks

Click the link in my Sig or go to blueridgemb.com or AMGEast.com

For the moment they take you to the same place, but AMGEast will be changing over the next few weeks should things go well.

Well actually the fuel distributors do have screens (9) and they can be cleaned. The first one is located inside the fuel inlet fitting screwed into the fuel distributor body. Remove it, use solvent and reverse air pressure to clean it out. There is one each on the fuel discharge ports (8 in total) and use use the same proceedure to clean them. Flushing the gunk out if the body is a bit more difficult. I use brake parts cleaner and air pressure to flow every which way through the body to flush any particles out. I have cured 5 out of 6 fuel distributors this way. The one that did not get cured had holes in the diaphram.

Interesting, I didn't see any screens in the FD I took apart..

so where are the 8 screens in the injectors, are they on the top or bottom?

dpetryk 03-23-2007 06:54 PM

They can be seen thru the top of the distributor looking down into the 8 ports. I use a stereo microscope to see them. They are deep and illumination is key to seeing them. The main fuel inlet fitting is similar. Take it off and try to look thru it. Shine a light. You can see the screen. granted they are not large but they are there.

johnlo,

the screens are black they can be seen where the fuel lines going to the injectors are connected on the FD.

Does any body know the way to get them out? They are made from plastic and I believe there should be a special tool with two longitudinal grooves.

I tried to extract the one on the main fuel screen without success

Bosch specialist may give some better advice on the right procedure.

lhodg5k,

I tried your link without success ,there seem to be a need for a user id and a password.

Well, curiosity got the best of me so I disassembled one of my CIS E FD's and found the screens. I had been told the early US cars had screens but apparently my source had it backwards.

Right now I'm looking for my dig. camera to snap a few pics.

The screens came out after I dissembled the two halves and various other shims/pistons/springs/ etc, etc..

Not sure why you were having trouble w/ the link...your the first who has said they needed to log in..

No need to remove them. Dont even try. They are wedged in place. They will break of you try to get them out. DOnt ask me how I know this. Just reverse flow some solvent (carb cleaner) thru them using air pushing the solvent.
