What to use to change power steering fluid/ oil? - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I had to drop the rack & pinion on my 1996 E300D. Any speacial fluid I should put back in it or maybe some Amsiol synthetic PS fluid? I thought I would see what the public opinion is...

I used the second, but got it at a local dealer. They wanted about $15/liter. This system doesn't take ATF.

A pal of mine is an Amsoil dealer and has it right in his shop for free to me. Any reason not to use Amsoil synthetic?

I've used Prestone power steering fluid with ZERO problems.

$2.87 a quart at Walmart.

never used any Amsoil product but if it meets MBZ power steering fluid specs. then perhaps it'll work.

FYI, as per MBZ, if you switch from regular non synthetic to synthetic, you must completely flush out all of the old power steering fluid.

if you feel you must go synthetic, MBZ does make a synthetic PS fluid but it's pricey.

if you're only considering Amsoil because you can get it for free, i'd play it safe and spend a little for the correct fluid that came with the car.

just my 2 cents...

C'mon man that's a farce.

They are perfectly compatible.

Most of the time both products are dino with one being a more hydrocracked(group III base anyone).

I drive 60 miles each way each day to work. The nearest MBZ dealer is 30 miles out of my way. It is not a cost issue but a lack of wanting to loose another hour of my life driving...
