Do any of you techies know the size of the allen wrench for these bolts? Seems that my neighbors starter motor has somehow worked its way loose and all I have to do is tighten them. I sure wouldn't mind knowing before I get my hands dirty tommorrow morning. Thanks in advance.

Thom,
I do not know the size of the wrench you will need but my guess is about 8 mm. I have yet to remove a starter from a Mercedes but for those starters that I have removed, I always needed an extension for the rachet socket for the back bolt. If this is the case with the Mercedes then you cannot use an L shaped Allen head wrench, you will need a hex socket that will fit on the end of an extension bar. Or if you have an old Allen head wrench that is the right size you can cut the end of it off with a cutting wheel and then insert the cut off into one of your existing millimeter sockets. Otherwise you can pick a hex head socket up at Sears or other tool store. Smiles. [Edited by ejsharp on 05-27-2001 at 12:22 PM]

TXBill is right. The starter requires a 10mm Allen wrench for removal...

Excellent!! The ONLY allen socket that I own is a 10mm!! Well, almost the only one. Anyway, I've got what I need. Thanks to you all.

Not only do you need a 10mm, but in socket form, a universal joint for it and the longest extension rod you can muster. To get the top bolt, you'll need to start back at the transmission's tail and reach over it using the extension. It's a piece of cake, if you have a 3" long (extension) rod.
