5sp manual rev.grinding noise w/clutch disengaged

My 1990 190e 2.6 w/5sp manual trans has a grinding grating noise in rever. with the clutch disengaged, if I take it out of gear while rolling backwards the noise goes away. No noise when under power in rev. only when I disengage the clutch and the car is rolling backwards with shifter in rev. Any Ideals
