W124 location of coolant temp. sensor.

Where can I find the coolant temp. sensor in a 90 300E? Is it easy to replace? Fan is running on high all the time. Its either this sensor, or a bad relay.

I just happen to have the hood open on my 300E and my temp sensor is on top of the head on the driver's side near the #4 Injector

Thanks guys, I will attempt to replace this. Those pics are a great help.

I see # 2 Aux fan sensor, and three #3 Coolant temp. sensor. Aren't these the same thing? I thought the coolant temp. sensor, sends a signal to the relay to turn on the high fan. What does # 2 aux fan sensor do then? My high speed fan wont shut off, and I cant figure if its the relay or the coolant temp sensor. Now what is # 2 supposed to do?

You know, Ihad forgotten about your post. That was a great idea, to post the pic and to get people to identify the parts. Makes it easier when talking about things--to know the part's name and location. :idea3:

Thanks Benz for encouraging me. I am posting another pix, asking knowledgeable people like you to identify other engine components. All inputs are greatly appreciated, I think not only by me, but it would be a big help for other "dummies" as well. :)

1. Valve cover
2. Thermo vacuum valve
3. Oil dip stick
4.
5. Fuel injector (first, 1 of 7)
6. That's the line from the coil to the distributor (some people call it a rotor). The distributor sits in front of the engine, under the plastic cover that is oh so close to the radiator fan!
7. the thermostat housing (Benz-LGB).
8. Belt tensioner bolt
9. brake vacuum hose (to assist with the power brakes, no vacuum no power brakes - BENZ-LGB).
10. Timing cover
11. Coolant hose
11a. also coolant hose?
12. power steering pump
13. ABS module
14. ABS lines
15. a/c pressure switch
16. a/c reciever/dryer
17. ballast resistor
18. high pressure a/c line
19. Ignition module
20. low pressure a/c line
21. looks like the cover for your coil

Info by Nels

Tex, 8 is the belt tensioner bolt, 12 is the power steering pump, 15 is the a/c pressure switch, 16 is the a/c reciever/dryer, 17 is a ballast resistor, 18 is the high pressure a/c line, 20 is the low pressure a/c line, and 21 looks like the cover for your coil

I can help you with #6. That's the line from the coil to the distributor (some people call it a rotor). The distributor sits in front of the engine, under the plastic cover that is oh so close to the radiator fan!

Trace it from left to right (as you stand in front of the engine and you will see).

Let me give a suggestion. Go to the Performance Parts website and do a search for your car and engine. They have tons of part schematics with the name and location of a lot of the parts that you are looking at under the hood.

I often use it as my cheat sheet.

BTW, all of us are dummies. The difference is that some of the dummies here have more technical knowledge than the other dummies. :D

#7 is the thermostat housing.

#9 is, I believe, a brake vacuum hose (to assist with the power brakes, no vacuum no power brakes :( ).

This is fun!

Here is a link to Performance Products:

BTW, that is an extremely clean engine bay.

Thanks BENZ. I updated the list with your inputs.

from the link Benz provided

the part names are added to the drawing for easier identification.

#100, #102, #103 Power steering pump, filter, gaskets
#112 Fuel Pressure Regulator

Now I am completely confused. Which switch on the intake manifold sends a signal to the aux fan relay? Is it called temp. sensor or aux fan switch? These are two differant things right? I need to order one because my fan wont shut off ( high speed) Is it the four prong switch or the two prong switch?
