W126 - squeaky steering wheel?
My SDL's wheel has a bit of a chirp/squeak when I turn the wheel... it's not a low PS pump or anything... is there a bearing or joint I can grease up?

The noise comes from inside the cabin ...right?

I was operating on another non associated item and had the sun-glass holder(kick panel) removed and started to look around for what the cause was. I noticed the top of the steering column sleeve the extends was touching the lower portion of the cluster frame. Also inside the column (using a dental mirror and a flashlight) there were all sorts of suspect items.
I extened the steering wheel and used some TRI-Flow lubricant on the column housing and also shot some electrical cleaner into the housing area. With great dissapointment I cannot tell you which one cured the problems - but the squeak is gone. |
Sounds like a plan, I have the kickpanel area off currently as I am trying to see if I have a good cruise amp (looks doubtful) so should be easy to grease up I hope..

There is a flat contact disc that has carbon brushes riding on it to maintain contact with the airbag and horn as the wheel turns. I had one squeak - the fix was to remove the wheel and lightly sand/clean the disk and the carbon brushes. Kinda like cleaning up a commutator on an alternator.
