Black Oily Substance at Exhaust Joint
Forgive the lack of proper terminology, but...
In the middle of the exhaust pipe, about halfway down the length of the car, there's a joint of some sort. And around that joint there's a black, oily substance which I just recently noticed. I suppose this might be motor oil (turbo seals, valve seals, etc. that need to be replaced), but I have not been able to detect ANY drop in oil level on the dipstick. So....could the black stuff be soot mixed with moisture of some sort?? What are the possibilities? How would a tech be able to figure out what it is? Is there any cause to be concerned? Thanks.

This MAY be simple condensation mixing with the soot already in your exhaust system giving the appearance of oil.

I would say you guys both hit the nail between the eyes. It's likely, just soot, with moisture mixed in it. I've seen this a million times, over the years.
