Hey everyone!

My mother-in-law's 300E had both fuel pumps replaced about
a year ago at a shop that charged more for the service than
the purchase price of a good used diesel. Anyhow, it has
happened again. I have done some work on the car (brakes,
waterpump, radiator, etc.) but I know more about the good old diesels. How hard is this job? How common is it for them to fail? Are there any external reasons (relays, etc)
for premature failure? Can I just bolt on a racing fuel pump from J.C. Whitney and by-pass the whole thing (Just
kidding!! Maybe....)?

Thanks, sorry for so many questions!

Klaus

They should not fail within a year. Mine are 13 years old and still working great. It is not a difficult job, the hardest part is to stop fuel from running out of the tank when you disconect the fuel hose. Estimate about 2 hours labor for a home DIY.

Good point PE, the pumps should not fail that quickly. Why do you think your fuel pumps have failed Klaus?
There is a fuel pump relay behind the battery usually with the word 'kickdown' written on top of it. Check that!
