Does Our Windshield "Do" anything?
 

catchy subject title huh?

my question really is, does the windshield on a 1995 E320 wagon have any coatings, layers, or whatever that maybe filters UV, cuts back on IR or is it just regular laminated glass? I ask because I was wondering if some kind of clear film that does reflect heat, cuts back on glare or filters out UV can be applied?

dare I mention 50% tint?

In CA you can't have tint on the door windows of a coupe or the front door windows of a sedan either.

Grumpy CHP officer with nothing better to do one day taught me that one.

Not sure if they sell it anymore, but there was a clear film that was applied to the front windshield that had UV qualities. Do a search for "clear front tint"

so are euro headlights and clear blinkers. :icon_rolleyes:

My windshield keeps the bugs off my face.

I think they come with a ever so slight tint. It is supposed to have a wermedaemmung quality. Heat dampening - or something to that effect. Hold up a white sheet of paper behind it, and see if the paper remains white, or if it looks a little greenish.

I asked the question for 2 reasons.

1) if the windshield already had some kind of factory tint or whatever that already totally reflects heat, UV, etc. then adding a film would be redundant.

2) in the BMW world, there are known problems with using tint on double pane windows because the tint alters how the glass was designed to operate in regards to thermal regulation. I didn't want that to be the case. But I guess that does not apply to windshields.

I suppose I'm over thinking the whole thing.
