I have an al hood on my 420 SEL. That's because some PO hit a deer and went to the junkyard and replaced parts. The lower radiator support is still bent from it.

BTW, the hood came from a 1st version W126 because it had no hood latch. I added the hood latch, and I had to drill some holes too. The hood springs are for the regular steel hood and the hood can fly up really fast so I have to be careful.

I'l like to get the correct hood springs for the car.

My 1982's were steel because they were rusting. And on the 1987 SDL a magnet will stick to both, really well so no aluminum their.

I have a trunk lid and hood from a 1988 420SEL in my basement and both are quite magnetic, so just steel their.

I have yet to see any mention of this in any MB literature, or FSM.

AFAIK its an urban legond.

Of the many W126 I've seen, I'd say the pre-'86 W126 have aluminum hoods and trunklids (the ones with the double latch). The later models had steel. I'm not sure about the SEC, though.

I also tested using magnets.

actually now that i think of it i am not sure about the trunk.

i never magnet tested the hoods either but they felt different than the steel hoods and i heard they are aluminum and so i think they are aluminum.

i believe i also have seen a picture of a 126 hood with paint flaking off to reveal aluminum too.
