I have a 1995 S320 that has a check engine light that comes on. I have tried to reset it, but it comes back on after a few days of driving. Is there a way to read out the trouble code(s) that are causing the check engine light to come on without using a computer? Thanks for the help!!

hardwick, make sure the gas cap is on firmly. Now how are you resetting the light to go off. Do have access to an impulse counter or trouble shooting diagnosing tool. It could be many things. Lately Ive seen since the new fuels thats out there casuing the 02 sensor to go bad. The new fuels burn alomost to lean at time causing premature failure of the oxygen sensor to go defective do to over heating and runing to lean,which is caused by the oxygenated fuels. Im just telling you what I see alot happening.

But first thing first find out and extract the code.

I don't think it's the fuel cap causing the check engine light on a 95. I could be wrong, but I believe this would be a pre-OBD2 car, so it isn't monitoring the fuel tank pressure. In answer to your question, no there is no "blink" code to find out what the problem is, you'll need to get it hooked up to a scanner to read the code. I don't believe an impulse counter will work on it either, but any scanner that will read OBD1 codes should find the reason for the light......

gilly I think you know what I meant. Not an impulse but an HHT. I hope were not in competition and your trying to correct me. For the gas cap your correct. Rem everyone doesn't know everything. And working on these cars day in day one tends to forget at time

Guido: His main question wasn't answered, which was if there was a way to get the trouble code without a scanner.
This was really the only reason I posted a response at all. Anything else-opinions on todays fuel affecting O2 sensors, etc, didn't really answer his question at all. It doesn't matter if I know what you meant by stating impulse counter vs. HHT, it's not relavant to his question at all.
I was just trying to give an accurate answer to his question, that's all.

How did you reset the fault code?? Using a LED/SW combo or pull the battery cable?

If the former, then just count the 'blinks' and go to my page (red house) under MENU#5 to see what the fault is.

If the latter, then you'll need to use a scanner (Menu#2) to read the codes as Gilly stated.

If you have the LED/Sw, my page(s) should help you as will I.

a defective wiring harness. I've seen a good many that trip the check engine light from the temp sensor location, when in fact, it's not defective. Seems especailly prevalent on the 3.2, whether in the 140 or 124. Good luck getting it repaired though. Most MB dealers are no longer any help on this obviously defective item.

Thanks for the help, guys. The fuel cap is very tight on this car. Also, I have been resetting the light by pulling the battery cable. Jim, what do you mean by the LED/Sw test? Also, does anybody know how much the scanners cost? Thanks again!

Please read my last post ***carefully***! It answers your questions.

In 1995 the s320 was obdII complaiant you should be able to use any generic obdII scan tool.How ever you will not be able to get any manufactor specific codes

Our new Ottoscan might help.
We just began offering it today in the PartsShop section of MercedesShop. It will read your codes and give you info you can post here in the Shop Forum. If you already have a Palm Pilot or Handspring Visor all you need is the software and the cable.

500SEC: Yes, but with a 'Pointer' or 'Retriever' scanner you can plug into 38 pin diag connector to get the "manufacturer specific" codes. To me that's a better way to go.

Bill: Nice to know re the Ottoscan. For $349, that's a real good deal assuming you have a PDA.

Don't pull out the battery cable, it might be cause some problem. last year, I did it one time, and just right after I put the cable back on the battery, the alternator went bad and I have to spend $400 to buy a new alternator. so be careful.

I have teh very same problem, teh engine check light would go on after two or three days from resetting. My car trouble code is P0411 and p1700

Would you be able to let me know what part I should replace.

When I was searching for equipment to pull codes for my 95 W140, every manufacturer I contacted told me their ODB II scanner would not work with my car. 95 model year W140 is OBD (aka OBD I).
