Hi All,
This is actually a serious question... :-)
I am trying to understand the difference in weight distribuion between the 124 E320 sedan and wagon. The latter weighs 200lbs more and I am struggling to account for all of the possible components which might be contributing to the weight difference.
So far, I can think of extra sheet metal and 2 panes of rear window glass. Perhaps some extra sound proofing for the roof and then the third seat.
What else might I be missing??
Thanks in advance

How about load leveling suspension and a heavier 5th door.

The interior appointments of the larger area are also heavier than the paneling in the trunk.

Ditto!

Don't discount the weight of 2 extra pieces of glass. Glass it a lot heavier per unit area than sheet metal. The late AMC Pacer demonstrated that by being a lot too heavy for its size.

Then too are the 'appointmenst.' My Suburban with the extra acre or two of glass and extra seats is a lot heavier than its pickup truck parents. It sits empty at the curb displacing 5,800 pounds. Yes, underway it also handles like the 3 tons of rolling stock that it is, but boy-oh-boy will it carry passengers and freight.

And the other, other reason for the extra weight should be for stiffening components to deal with the fact that the structural box is now different. The rear shelf behind the passenger seat of a sedan is a structural component.

Plus there's no crumple zone back there...it's not meant to deform much in an accident. That's some serious sheet metal back there-a pickup truck backed into my wife recently, striking the right rear quarter panel quite hard. My wife was completely surprised at how little damage was done to the sheet metal. Pretty thick sheet it would seem.
