Remove the "face" of the speedometer -w124
Got the speedomert out to fix :) - but couldn't get to the gears.
Please suggest how I can get the face off - there are two screws, but - how do I remove the needle? Here's a reference for great details - but an older model - face wasn't removed. http://dieselgiant.com/repairyourodometer.htm The gears are just slipping - all seem to be where they should - I just want to "glue" the gears back to the pin. Thanks for the help. Removing the face of the speedometer. |
Suggestions appreciated
Is there a way to remove the speedometer pointer (needle)?
Thanks |
It just pries off, and pops back on. Get a long broad screwdriver and put it under there and twist. You might want to cover up the face with masking tape to protect it a bit.

i usually use a common fork from the kitchen, i use a business card under it to prevent any damage to the face. be careful, the needle car go far when it comes off

Is odometer problem a common thing on our cars? My '84 190E had a broken odometer when I got it. I got a used speedo at a junk yard, and its trip odometer is messed up. I'll be pulling it back out to thoroughly clean the inside of the cluster cover (previous owner was a smoker) I will be lubing the gears when I take it apart,
One good thing is that the junk yard speedo goes to 140 mph! Makes me feel like I have a real sports car... until I step on the gas that brings the 8V 2.3 to life! |
Common problem - hmmm yes/no
There seems to be manny threads discussing the speedometer - more specific the odometer.
But this car is new to me (1990 300E) and magically the odometer wasn't fully functional when I bought the car. And there were scrape marks on the dash, where the hooks go in. But I will fix the sucker, if I have to replace it. This weekend I'll take it apart again, and remove the needle, as described above. Thanks all for the suggestions. |
