W 210 seat noise
 

The car is a 2001 E 320 4-Matic. I have this annoying seat noise that occurs when I accelerate rapidly or come to a stop. The noise is definitely coming from the inside part of the seat, closest to the console. If I lift my butt up, I can bring about the noise. I have checked the four bolts that hold the seat rail to the floor and all are tight.

I have searched the forum for this problem, but it seems that most people are talking about a bolt that they replace on the outside of the seat--closest to the door. My noise is coming from the inside, closest to the console.

There is a decorative piece between the seat and the console--matching the carpet. If I put my hand on this piece and lift up and down on the bottom seat cushion with my derierre, I can feel the vibration of the noise, seemingly right under this piece.

The W210s have Seat frame problems....I Have replaced several..
One can fix it without frame replacement Install a couple washers to fill up the slack in the frame pivot...Take a Look..Its Not that Hard!


I took of the seat mounting by taking four star bolts that holds the seat to the car floor. Traced the noise to the metal to metal contact on the front right corner of the seat. I can clearly see the existing "play" (in the front part of the seat height adjustment mechanism) is causing metal to metal contact that I simply eliminated by simply inserting a couple of washers in between the two corresponding parts (hence eliminating the metal to metal contact by making them farther apart).

Joe, the driver's seat in our 1998 E320 made a clicking sound from the time it was new. The local MB dealer replaced the seat adjuster under warranty. Not sure how difficult that would be for a DIY project.

Mark--thanks. I will look into shimming the seat frame in the way you describe. I believe my problem is located in the right front frame rail area, as you suggest.

I think Mercedes came out with a special replacement bolt to cure the seat squeaks. I got a few of them at an MBCA event a couple of years ago.

.... sound we are getting in the 2003 E320 wagon?

I was told this wasn't cover under the extended warranty! Weird. Very unsettling for a three year old car.

Do the seats need to be taken out?

I'm sure shimming or changing the bolts is the best way to do it. However, I was able to spray some lubricant and the clicking sound went away. I'm sure it still has play in it, I just can't hear the clicking now that whatever was rubbing together is lubricated. My 2 cent solution.
